The Lancashire Village Book by Lancashire Federation of Women's Institutes

The Lancashire Village Book

by the Lancashire Federation of Women's Institutes

252 pages, 8 inches x 5.5 inches

Lancashire is a county of fascinating contrasts, from the seafaring settlements around Morecambe Bay to the hill farming communities of the Pennines, from the sturdy moorland villages built round a central mill to the fertile Fylde plain, once the granary of Lancashire.
The roots of a county lie in its villages. The Lancashire Village Book describes over 200 of them, recalling the history, people and events which give each its individual character.
Written by local village W.I.s and compiled by the Lancashire Federation of Women's Institutes, the book has a plentiful supply of stories, anecdotes and atmosphere. It introduces the reader to a flourishing rural world and will be a welcome companion both on the bookshelf and in the car.

The Area of Botanical Survey

The area surveyed is that which is administered by the Lancaster District Council, encompassing 220 square miles and having a population of approximately 126,000. To the north it is bounded by the border with Cumbria, to the west by Morecambe Bay, to the east by the Yorkshire border, and to the south by the southern boundaries of the parishes of Cockerham, Ellel, and Over Wyresdale.
In the present survey, this area has been divided into tetrads (2km x 2km square), an account of which is given with the explanation of the distribution maps.
The area includes the parishes of Silverdale, Yealand Conyers, Yealand Redmayne, Priest Hutton, Borwick, Over Kellet, Nether Kellet, Gressingham, Whittington, Arkholme-with-Cawood, Slyne-with-Hest, Burrow-with-Burrow, Leck, Ireby, Tunstall, Cantsfield, Melling-with-Wrayton, Wennington, Tatham, Wray-with-Botton, Hornbywith-Farlton, Claughton, Caton, Quernmore, Ellel, Over Wyresdale, Scotforth, Thurnham, Cockerham, Overton, Middleton, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe, Carnforth U.D.C., Morecambe and Heysham, and the Lancaster City area.

Earlier Botanical Surveys Relative to the Present Survey

To our knowledge, there have been no previous botanical surveys restricted to this area. However, in 1907, Wheldon and vJilson published "The Flora of West Lancashire.
West Lancashire is defined as the Watsonian Vice County No. 60 and includes all of Old Lancashire north of the River Ribble together with the parish of Dalton. This area was divided by Wheldon and Wilson into three divisions which were then subdivided into eight districts:
North Division 0) Leck
(2) Kellet
(3) Silverdale and Heysham West Division
(4) Pilling
( 5) Kirkham  East Division
(6) Wray and Quernmore
(7) Wyresdale and Bleasdale
 (8) Longridge
The area covered by the present survey includes all of districts 1, 3 and 6; all of district 2 excepting the parish of Dalton; the northern part of district 4 and most of district 7 excluding Bleasdale.
Overall the present survey examined 45-46?~ of the area surveyed by Wheldon and Wilson and covers some of the most attractive and botanically interesting parts of Vice-County 60.
Wheldon and Wilson's Flora included most of the history of the flora that was known at that time together with geographic and geological descriptions for each of the eight districts. The present publication covers these aspects in much less detail and aims simply to give a detailed and up-to-date account of the area's flora based on fieldwork carried out over the last ten years (mostly in the last six years). It should also serve as a basis for monitoring botanical changes in the area.
